Acuity Brands’ Holophane Luminaires Selected for City of Chicopee, MA Renovation Project

Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI; “Company”), a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and control solutions, is proud to announce its participation in a project to relight and renovate sections of downtown Chicopee, Massachusetts (“City”) using its Holophane®GranVille® LED luminaires. The Holophane brand has been a recognized leader in high-quality and lowest total cost of ownership lighting solutions for commercial, industrial, and outdoor applications for over 110 years.

The City recently began revitalization efforts in the downtown area, which included providing more uniform illumination and a brighter, more secure lighting environment in order to attract patrons back to its business district. An objective was to replace the City’s old 100W high pressure sodium fixtures that had been retrofitted years ago. These fixtures were spread throughout the downtown district, which comprises four city blocks containing city hall, office buildings, restaurants and nightclubs. Earlier in the year, the City received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, part of which was designed to make the downtown area more energy efficient and sustainable, and the remainder of which was to be applied to the downtown relighting project. Because the funds for the relighting project were insufficient Chicopee Electric Light (“CEL”), the local utility, joined in and collaborated with the City on a financial plan to complete the funding, allowing it to fulfill the revitalization goals and maximize the energy savings.

Acuity Brands’Holophane team was brought into the project by CEL’s Engineering & Operations Manager, Jim Lisowski, to evaluate an energy-efficient relighting solution. The project required that the existing pole locations and poles be preserved. Holophane GranVille LED 58W and 116W luminaires were selected for a pilot program to evaluate performance and determine the effects of modernizing the lighting environment. Ultimately, the GranVille LED 58W luminaires were recommended. The City and CEL have now completed the relighting of the downtown business district and have been extremely pleased with the performance of the product, the impact on the appearance of the downtown area and the overall energy savings.

The HolophaneGranVille LED fixtures are offered with classic or premier optics and a variety of trims, luminaire shapes and uplight options. Asymmetric and symmetric distributions of light provide added flexibility for applications such as parks, city streets, residential areas, campuses, walkways and parking lots. The luminaire’s door assembly allows simple access to the electronic driver for ease of maintenance and its borosilicate glass optics never turn yellow or cloudy as they age, maintaining high lumen output efficiencies.

“The HolophaneGranVille LED luminaires are designed for areas that require a long system operating life combined with an aesthetically pleasing appearance that complements the environment,” said Jack Ries, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President and General Manager, Holophane. “We are delighted to have helped the City of Chicopee implement a dramatic lighting renovation for its downtown business district,” Ries continued.

Acuity Brands’ Lithonia Lighting and Sensor Switch help Minneapolis Public Housing Authority Achieve Substantial Energy Savings

ATLANTA, Mar 09, 2011 – Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI; “Company”), a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and control solutions, is proud to announce that it was selected by the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (“MHPA”) to provide LED lighting solutions designed to reduce maintenance and energy costs and achieve sustainability goals.

The MPHA has operated as an independent agency since 1991, though public housing has existed in Minneapolis since the 1930s. Today, the MPHA owns and operates approximately 5,800 public housing units, administers more than 4,000 Section 8 vouchers, a program providing federal housing assistance for low income renters and home owners, and operates two homeownership programs. As part of its ongoing renovation efforts, the MPHA is always looking for ways to be more cost efficient and sustainable. This was the goal when the MPHA began remodeling a 25-story high-rise senior apartment complex in 2009. In 2010, the MHPA installed more than 125 Acuity Brands’(R) Lithonia Lighting(R) RTLED(TM) luminaires and more than 375 RT5D LED luminaires throughout a senior high-rise facility. The new LED lighting is being used in all the common areas, including hallways, stairwells, offices, kitchens and boiler rooms.

To achieve even greater energy efficiency, the MPHA also installed Acuity Brands’ SensorSwitch(R) occupancy sensors, creating an intelligent lighting and controls solution. About a year later, the senior facility has reduced the energy consumption associated with this lighting application by more than 77 percent, the carbon dioxide emissions by 76 percent and the maintenance costs by 58 percent. “This is a critical impact for our agency and taxpayers, especially in a time of reduced public revenues,” said John Plifka, MPHA manager of facilities and development.

The aesthetics of the lighting is another critical benefit. “The luminaires are beautiful, and you cannot tell the difference between a traditional fluorescent lighting system and the RTLED,” said Shawn Meyer, LC, LEED A.P. with Davis & Associates, the lighting professionals who consulted the MPHA.

MPHA plans to continue installing LED lighting in its facilities. “The RTLED lighting system is working perfectly and the feedback from residents and property management staff has all been positive,” continued Plifka. “I am very proud of our new LED lighting system; I truly believe this is the future of lighting design.”

The RTLED is a high-quality, volumetric recessed luminaire that delivers ambient white light uniformly throughout an entire space while reducing energy and maintenance costs and a building’s environmental footprint. Powered by an advanced LED light engine, the RTLED luminaire delivers an expected 50,000 hour system life and a superior lighting environment, including high color rendering (80+ CRI), 3500K color temperature, and full range dimming with 0-10V DC control. With the widest array of sensors offered from any manufacturer, Acuity Brands’ Sensor Switch provides an innovative and cost-effective lighting controls solution for every application. Its occupancy sensors and photocell products utilize the most advanced technology in the industry, all while being simple to install and easy to use. Both product families are available nationally through Acuity Brands’ Lithonia Lighting sales representatives and authorized distributors.

Acuity Brands Helps the City of Hercules, CA “Go Green” with Holophane LEDgend Roadway LED Lighting

ATLANTA, Mar 08, 2011 – Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI) (“Company”), a market leader in innovative energy-efficient lighting and control solutions, is proud to announce its participation in a sustainability project to relight portions of Hercules, CA using its Holophane(R) brand of luminaires. The Holophane brand has been a recognized leader in high-quality and lowest total cost of ownership lighting solutions for commercial, industrial, and outdoor applications for over 110 years.

Portions of busy Sycamore Avenue and Refugio Valley Road in Hercules, CA were once illuminated with 161 cobra head luminaires with 100-watt high pressure sodium lamps. The City of Hercules retrofit the units with contemporary styled LEDgend(R) Roadway LED luminaires from Holophane, cutting energy usage nearly 40 percent and increasing visibility and safety with uniformly lit streets and roadways. The new luminaires light both two and four-lane sections of roadway lined with homes, community buildings, businesses, restaurants and strip malls. The fixtures also illuminate stretches of parking along the streets, as well as sidewalks, previously plagued by pockets of darkness. Existing poles were used as they were still highly serviceable, saving the city additional investment that would have otherwise been required.

One of the challenges was to provide sufficient illumination levels on the roadway and sidewalks since the poles were spaced 170 feet apart and fixtures were 33 feet above the ground. This challenge was met by the LEDgend Roadway LED luminaires permanent prismatic glass optics that control light distribution and reduce glare. The high quality of light of the LEDgend is specified with Type III wide asymmetric optical distribution and maintains 0.8 average footcandles with a 4:1 maximum to minimum ratio, which is designed to direct the maximum amount light on task.

Light trespass was a concern for a number of houses that back up to the roadway. The LEDgend fixtures’ optical control cuts light off at property lines to minimize the illumination that would otherwise spill onto adjacent properties. The luminaires also provide no uplight. With the fixtures’ thermal management system and lower junction temperature, LEDgend luminaires are designed for maximum life in ambient environments up to 40C and are equipped with dual drivers and an associated transfer switch design that allow for up to 80,000 hours of virtually maintenance-free operation, or for a period of 18 to 20 years.

“The new LED street lights are not only energy efficient but they appear brighter and provide more uniform lighting, making our roads safer for motorists and pedestrians,” said Jose Pacheco, assistant civil engineer for the City of Hercules. “The new fixtures have been installed for a short time and we have already received a lot of positive feedback from the community,” Pacheco continued.

The relight project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program. “We are thrilled that with the availability of federal grant funds, the City of Hercules is able to move toward more energy-efficient practices,” Pacheco said. “In addition to reducing energy costs, the LED light fixtures are designed to last longer, which means we also save in maintenance and replacement costs.”
